EMV-enabled cards offer an extra layer of security by using a complex encrypted verification process to validate the card and carry out point-of-sale transactions (“EMV” originally stood for Europay, Mastercard, Visa). Due to this secure technology, EMV-embedded cards can be used as a contactless form of payment. Cards with this ability feature a Wi-Fi symbol. When the cardholder makes a purchase, the transaction is approved by simply tapping the card on the point-of-sale device.
If the transaction is for a large amount, the cardholder may be prompted to enter a personal identification number (PIN). The EMV system automatically flags the card if too many transactions occur within a short time. If this happens, a PIN will be required for the next purchase, no matter how small. This reduces opportunities for theft and fraud.
