Adapting POS to the New Retail Environment

Headed by Brian Kamstra, Retriever Merchant Solutions is a company that has grown to employ 225 employees. A payment processing supplier, Retriever Merchant Solutions has ranked in the top 10 a few years ago for its retail payment solutions by Retail CIO Outlook Magazine, an online publication that covers technology and retail-related industry news.

In the article “Point-of-Sale Adaptability Key to Winning Rapidly Changing Retail,” Retail CIO Outlook Magazine reported that for current retail outlets to succeed they would have to incorporate a few strategies into their business platform. One major shift is the movement from full-service checkout lanes to self-service lanes.

One challenge for retail businesses is that they are serving both young and older consumers. Young consumers are more comfortable with newer technologies, which has definitely changed the way they shop, for example being more comfortable with self-service checkout. On the other hand, older customers, ones who did not grow up in a digital environment, might not be as comfortable with self-checkout. Retailers have to find a way to meet the demands of both populations.

Not only is important for retailers to incorporate technologies such as self-checkout to remain competitive, but they also have to do so in a way that provides the least amount of friction. Right now, a number of retailers have already incorporated self-checkout into their platforms, but for many, transitioning into an outlet that provides both self-checkout and full services can be awkward. For this reason, retailers should seek out payment solutions providers that can assist with transitioning some registers into the self-service platform to avoid the messiness that sometimes comes when a store is undergoing major construction.
